Gloucester Road in Bristol is the longest road of independent shops anywhere in the UK and is known as the Indie Shopping District of Bristol. This unique and very special little pocket of Bristol now proving to be a favourite socialising location for many who live all across the city. So whether you're looking to do a spot of shopping, wine and dine in one of the many restaurants, or enjoy the nightlife of the quirky area, this part of Bristol has it all. The top of Gloucester road known locally as Pigsty Hill runs straight down all the way to the Arches which then leads to Stokes Croft which ends up in the centre of town.
Bordering the northern edge of Bristol’s centre, it neighbours the energetic and edgy St Pauls and the Georgian terraces of Kingsdown. It is an extremely diverse area with a real melting pot of cultures. It has a very strong creative core and showcases local artists and musicians. Stokes Croft now has a real buzz and has some inspiring street art from all comers including the globally recognised Banksy. It is a vibrant, energised area where anything goes.
Places to eat and drink in the local area
Bakers & Co - Quality brunch, really great options with a menu which changes regularly. A lovely little spot to watch the world go by.
Fed303 – Another fantastic brunch spot further up Gloucester road. Amazing selection of daily salads and cakes. Lots of veggie options.
Flour and Ash – Woodfired pizza and homemade ice cream. That’s all they do and they do it amazingly well. They also do gluten free pizza.
The Grace – really lovely tapas style small plates and incredible Sunday roasts. Great quality food and a great pub – also has a lovely garden!
Suncraft – Vegan and gluten free plant based restaurants. Loads of great options and really fresh food. They also offer a discount for takeout.
Simply Thai – Really authentic little place. Food is really great value for money, also BYOB!
The Gallimaufry – Great pub on Gloucester road with lovely outside area. They do good food options too!
Bomboloni – Fantastic Italian restaurant with reliably delicious food and lots of great choices. Has a nice little outdoor area too.
The Hobgoblin – Order the dirty dirty fries, they invented them! Great pub with lots of options for burgers and fries.
Koocha – Names as one of the best vegan restaurants in 2018. Vegan mezze – they also do a vegan doner kebab which is amazing.
Jamaica Street Stores - This is the new restaurant on the block and is amazing. Make sure you go if you have time and book a table. It’s very popular. The food style is large plates and high end locally sourced food.
Bells Diner - This little gem of a place is tucked away in Stokes Croft on Picton Street and does amazing small plates. The wine list is also incredible. Would highly recommend.
Poco - A great tapas place. They change the menu often but keep a few favourites on regularly. Very relaxed and chilled environment.
El Jefe Jose - Cuban sandwiches and fresh juices. Well worth a visit. Nowhere to sit down but a great place to stop by on your way into the centre.
The Bristolian – Really great little brunch place with some more unusual options. Lovely chilled out café slightly off the beaten track.
Caribbean Croft - Fantastic Carribean food, have never been disappointed with their offerings. Get a few dishes and share. Great cocktails too!
Number 51 – Fun little bar with a great beer garden. They also do pizzas.
Masa and Mescal – Mexican Tapas style restaurant, great for sharing. Loads of fresh daily specials and great Mexican inspired cocktails.
The Bell – Hidden away off the main strip The Bell is stokes crofts secret pub – its miniscule but great fun and has a lovely little garden.
Must do things while you stay:
Take a tour of Banksy’s work all through Bristol, theres several pieces in this area – be sure to look out for ‘the mild mild west’.

Check out all the shops on Gloucester road. It’s the longest stretch of independent shops in the UK and theres a few real gems!
Visit one of the many nearby parks – St Andrews park, Cotham park, Redland park, Castle park and Montpelier park are all within walking distance of this area.
Head to Gloucestershire County Cricket Club to watch a match!
Keep an ear out for music streaming onto the streets, some of the city's most famous clubs are based here, including Lakota and the Blue Mountain there’s also plenty of live music to be found in the many bars and pubs in this area.
